Maths
Intent
Mathematics is essential to everyday life and is a central component of the curriculum of Kenilworth Primary School. We believe that pupils who can achieve in maths become confident, resilient and independent mathematicians, who are proficient in using mental and written mathematics, furthering their understanding of the world around them. We want our pupils to have a secure understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics: place value, calculation and understanding of shape.
At Kenilworth Primary School we use the HFL's ESSSENTIALSMaths planning tools which outline the sequence of teaching for each area within maths. This also covers the requirements of the National Curriculum. The maths sequences support the delivery of a spiral curriculum, in which learning is built upon step by step, sequence by sequence and year on year. The materials are aspirational and ensure progression and coverage throughout all year groups.
Implementation
At Kenilworth Primary School, we ensure that our mathematics planning follows a clear progression of skills and ensures that there is full coverage of the National Curriculum. Our mathematics curriculum is one which is accessible for our pupils through a progressive scheme that supports and builds on previously acquired knowledge and skills. HFL Essentials is used to match our pupils' need and builds upon their prior knowledge and skills.
Before teaching, we:
- Plan using supporting documents from the Hertfordshire for Learning Essential Maths scheme and adapt where necessary.
- Refer to HFL Essential Maths written calculation progression (see below) to ensure mental maths and written methods are embedded.
During each unit, we:
- Ensure pupils have access to range of manipulatives to support their learning
- Create opportunities for pupils to use mathematics to reason
- Follow a concrete, pictorial, abstract model where necessary
- Provide pupils with opportunities to make links to other curriculum area wherever possible
After each unit, we:
- Assess which pupils have met the learning objectives and note which pupils need further consolidation
- Revise planning documentations and long term plans to assess the current needs of the children
Throughout the year, we:
- Use fluency sessions to consolidate prior learning. Key areas covered may include vocabulary, place value and the four operations.
- Use maths interventions to support the needs of pupils
- Times Tables Rockstars is used as homework and an engaging interactive tool to help support pupils rapid recall of timetables
- Numbots if used as homework and an engaging interactive platform to support pupil's understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction.
Programme of Study
Fluency
One of the three aims of the Primary Maths curriculum, is for children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice and for them to develop the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
To help achieve this, maths fluency sessions take place at least three times a week. These are short sessions of approximately 15 minutes, which focus on developing number fluency, as well as revisiting other mathematical concepts.
Impact
By using HFL's ESSENTIALMaths planning, we strive for our learners to be fluent mathematicians who can apply their knowledge in a range of contexts. Our impact of our maths curriculum, is evaluated through several measures:
- Assessment data
- Staff meeting and CPD
- Moderations and pupil progress meetings
- Diagnostic assessments termly
- NFER assessments termly
- Multiplication Tables Check
- End of KS2 assessment
