Year 1 is an incredibly exciting year for all children, as the enter Key Stage 1 and develop their independence as learners. We really prioritise the transition into Year 1, to ensure children cope smoothly with the change from the Early Years to the Key Stage 1 curriculum.
Although learning becomes more formalised throughout the year, we also ensure that children are given the opportunities to develop their skills across the curriculum.
In order to preserve the relationships forged in Early Years and to support the transition to Year 1; our Key Stage one topics work on a two year rolling cycle, with Years 1 and 2 working together. For more information about the Year 1 curriculum, please use the following links.
At Kenilworth, we ask our children to complete half termly ‘home learning grids’ for their homework. This enables children to practise a wide range of skills at home and to share their learning across the curriculum.
We also fully understand the impact of regular reading on a child’s development. Therefore we ask for every child to read a minimum of 3 times per week.

In June, the children in Year 1 will be sitting the Phonics Screening Test. This is a short task that tests the children’s ability to read unknown words using their phonics skills. For an introduction to phonics, below is the Year 1 Meet the Teacher powerpoint from September. For further information about phonics, the test and how you can help please visit the phonics page.
