Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds or ‘phonemes’. They are then taught how to blend these sounds together to read the whole word.

The Year one phonics screening check includes sounds that are covered in phases 2-5.
The main way that you can help is by reading regularly with your child at home. Reading to them, listening to them read, sharing songs and rhymes are all vital opportunities for your child’s progression.
