At Kenilworth, we use the Essentials scheme of work by Herts for Learning to support the children's mathematical development.
The essentials planning is based on clear progression of mathematical concepts, that leads to consistency of approach across all key stages. To support the development of skills for all children, we use the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach.
Our calculation policy is based on the HfL ESSENTIALmaths written calculation progression, adapted for the needs of our children. It links the key concrete experiences with pictorial and abstract representations (written symbolic and spoken). This supports pupils to move with confidence and deep conceptual understanding through each strand of calculation.
